Mary Down

Mary Down (Fundraising_Pics/Mary Down resize.jpg)

Mary got involved with Action Duchenne when her grandson Seth was diagnosed with DMD. Mary is a dab hand at making jams and preserves, using blackberries picked from hedgrows or tomatoes she has grown herself. She then sells the pots complete with Action Duchenne sticker at local events. Mary has organised various street collections, made cards, and organised a sponsored walk and cycle along the Tarka trail which raised £2,500.

Mary says "When you start out, you can't imagine how you will raise £1000, but once you get started , it is surprisingly easy. A street collection here, a bag pack there, a chairty quiz night at the local pub, a couple of sponsored walks or cycle rides and beofre you know it, you are really starting to make a difference."

Gemma Hanna

Gemma Hanna has been supporting Action Duchenne to help make a difference for her nephew Luke and all those living with Duchenne and Becker. From arranging Easter raffles to selling reindeer food Gemma is always thinking of ways to help raise awareness and funds.

Gemma said "I am supporting Action Duchenne to raise awareness and funds because my nephew Luke was diagnosed with DMD in 2010. At the time of his diagnosis I had heard of muscular dystrophy but I was unaware of the severity of the condition. Like many supporters of Action Duchenne I believe there is huge progress being made towards finding a cure and I want to do all I can to help support this. After meeting some of the families at the International Conference in November I have had experience of the difficulties some families face every day and if i can not only my nephew but also other families then I will try in every way. Whether that be selling raffle tickets or walking the Great Wall of China I will do it-I don't want to see any more families facing life with Duchenne and no cure.
