About the competition

The rules of the competition are straightforward with the leading scorer within each league, at the end of each season, receiving an award.  There are separate categories within the competition for men's, women's, disability and youth/junior leagues.  Where there is a tie, the award is decided on a goals per game ratio. Goals scored in cup competitions do not count.  Reserve team goals scored will be counted separately from goals scored by the same player in a different division for a club’s first team.

In addition to awards for the leading scorer in each league, the following awards will be given to:

- the leading scorer across England
- the leading scorer from all top tier divisions
- the leading scorer in each region from the men's competition
- the leading scorer from each region’s top tier division from the men's competition

Golden boot winners will each receive a certificate and national winners will also receive a trophy. All golden boot winners will be entered into a prize draw to win top prizes for themselves and their teams.

Many of the participating leagues maintain their own online record of their leading scorers throughout the season whilst leagues will be able to submit details of their top goalscorers throughout the season or at the end of each season. The leading online league management website, football mitoo, has teamed up with Action Duchenne to assist in the collation of goalscoring statistics for those leagues who use its web pages.
