Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFO's)

What is AFO’s

AFO’s are ankle-foot Orthoses and are fitted from the toes or mid foot to just below the knee. These are also called ankle Splints.

Why?

Studies show consistent use of night splints with regular stretches helps the range of movement in the ankle and can reduce the tightness of the tendo-achilles (TA’s).

Majority of young men will experience tightness in the ankle quite early on. Therefore it is important to start wearing night splints as early as possible after diagnosis to reduce the tightness in the angles.

How long?

Parents are advised to try and encourage the child to wear night splints as long as possible, hopefully all through the night.
