  1. All Party Group on Muscular Dystrophy - 'The Patient Perspective'

    Further to the meeting held on the 5th December 2011 at Stormont, the second session of the All Party Group’s inquiry into access to specialist neuromuscular care will be held on Tuesday 7th February 2012, 12.30pm-2pm, Room 29, Parliament Buildings . Chaired by Conall McDevitt MLA, this inquiry is investigating current service provision for those with muscle-wasting disease in Northern Ireland. This session will focus on the patient perspective across Northern Ireland. This meeting will be attended by families from across Northern Ireland affected by Muscular Dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions.   1. Scotland Cross Party Group on Muscular Dystrophy session - Care Advisor Support

    Cross Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on Muscular Dystrophy session on Care Advisor support: Wednesday 8 February 2012, 1pm - 2.30pm, Committee Room 5, Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, EH99 1SP The session will focus on the urgent need for increased neuromuscular Care Advisor support for families living with muscle disease in Scotland and the proposed pilot for Muscle Specialist Advisor posts. The session is part of the follow-up to the Cross Party Group's inquiry into access to specialist neuromuscular care and social care in Scotland which resulted in the publication of the Mackie Report in September 2010. MSPs in the Cross Party Group will be following up issues relating to Care Advisor support with NHS bosses and are keen to hear about the experiences of services from people living with muscle disease.   1. International Rare Disease Day 2012

    Rare Disease Day 2012 is the fifth annual international event which raises awareness for rare diseases. Involving more than forty countries worldwide and including a diverse mix of activities, Rare Disease Day hopes to coordinate policy actions in different countries and provide information for patients, governments and the public. There are events throughout the UK, with talks and exhibitions at Royal Holloway University (http://www.rhul.ac.uk/rarediseaseday), the launching of the Northern Ireland Rare Disease Partnership in Belfast (http://www.raredisease.org.uk/ni-partnership) as well as awareness raising events in West Yorkshire, Bristol, Suffolk, Waterford and Aberdeen (with more being confirmed).     RDUK is an active member of the Northern Ireland Rare Disease Partnership which will be launched officially on Rare Disease Day! In addition, the Patient and Client Council has produced a report looking into experiences of obtaining a diagnosis of a rare disease in Northern Ireland, which will also be launched at the event taking place in the Pavilion on Stormont Estate, Belfast at 11:30am. The event will provide an opportunity to learn more about both of these and to hear from the experiences of patients affected by rare diseases and their carers.     In advance of Rare Disease Day, Genzyme invited the Chair of Rare Disease UK, Alastair Kent, to speak at their national sales and marketing conference about how industry and patient organisations can effectively collaborate in supporting patients with rare diseases and the forthcoming UK plan for rare diseases. Genzyme's manufacturing centre at Haverhill, Suffolk is to hold a rare disease awareness day with coffee and cakes sales on 29th February.

Kathryn, who has a son with Duchenne, will be climbing 19,340 feet above sea level to reach the summit of the world’s highest free-standing mountain.     On Saturday April 21st at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole, (B40 1PP), Action Duchenne will be holding a key one day meeting for UK Duchenne families and supporters. The meeting will discuss the implications of the Coalition Government's reorganisation of the NHS, and the impact on Standards of Care for Duchenne. We will assess current patient access to International Standards of Care for Duchenne with examples of best practice from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. There will be workshops for parents who have chosen to participate in our 'Letting Go' project, which is part of Action Duchenne's exciting new Transition Project.     Action Duchenne has seen great support over the years with participation in the ever growing Edinburgh Marathon. The event has now incorporated a variety of runs for all levels and the waiting is over as entries for the 2012 Edinburgh Marathon Festival are now open. The 2012 Edinburgh Marathon Festival will incorporate several races over the marathon running festival weekend consisting of the following: Saturday 26th May 2012 will stage the EMF 10km, 5km, 2 Junior Races for runners aged 6-10 and 11-14, an International Breakfast Run, Mascot Race, a 5k wheelchair and 5k hand-bike race. Sunday 27th May 2012 the marathon, half marathon and team relay will take place. Over 30,000 entrants are expected to take part across the Edinburgh Marathon Festival weekend and here is your chance to take part and help Action Duchenne.     2012 has a different route and a different name, however the determination of father Phil Carr remains the same as he takes to his bike again to help raise funds and awareness for Action Duchenne. This year will see Phil take to the road and cover 63 miles on the first day followed by a further 103 miles on the second day! Inspired by the pioneering Sea to Sea Cycle Route (C2C), the W2W route passes through a variety of wonderful countryside to the south. It stretches between Walney Island, just outside Barrow-in-Furness on Cumbria’s Irish Sea coast and Wearmouth in Sunderland along the North Sea coast.     Stuart Giles, father to Dylan who has Duchenne, together with a team of work colleagues and friends completed the 51 mile cycle ride from Glasgow to Edinburgh on the 11th September 2011 helping to raise fantastic funds and awareness for Action Duchenne. Continuing with the dedication of helping to make a difference Stuart will be taking part in the Pedal for Scotland event again on 9th September 2012.     Action Duchenne has secured 25 places for the 2012 Bupa Great North Run. The world's largest half marathon will see participants covering 13.1 miles between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields.
