Home Adaptations and the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)
As our sons get older their muscles deteriorate and activities such as climbing stairs or taking a bath become difficult if not impossible. At this point many families may move to single storey accommodation which has been purpose built for wheelchair users. This is not essential, however, as houses can be adapted to cater for your son's needs.
Most families will want to apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant from their local authority. This grant is still means tested in the UK apart from in Northern Ireland where the means test has been abolished after a campaign by parents.
Please read Paul's advice below if you are intending to apply for a DFG as he may be able to help you with a difficult process that should be an automatic right for young people with DMD.
