Dr John Bourke is a Consultant & Honorary Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, & Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medical Sciences, Newcastle University. He has for a long time been interested in the management of the cardiac aspects of muscular and myotonic dystrophies. Working closely with the Neuromuscular Genetics team led by Prof Kate Bushby at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle, he runs a dedicated Cardiology-Muscle clinic at Freeman Hospital. For a number of years, he has been an invited speaker at the annual Parent Project / Action Duchenne meeting in London. He is Chief Investigator for the multi-centre, BHF-funded research trial of preventive treatments for the heart in DMD.

If you are reading this, you may be interested to know about a British Heart Foundation funded research trial, starting in five UK hospitals in early 2008 in boys, aged 7-12 years, with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
