Physiotherapy
At the moment there is no cure for DMD. However, it has been shown that using a combination of treatments including physical management, night ventilation and steroids, boys are walking for longer, many of them until their mid teens. This has tremendous effects on their health as it prevents an early onset of scoliosis (curving of the spine caused by lack of mobility) thus allowing their lungs space to breathe and putting less pressure on the heart.
It is very important to get professional advice from a physiotherapist before starting any Physical Management programmes for boys with DMD. Download these files from our library as they provide excellent advice on physical management of DMD. Discuss this information with your physiotherapist.
