Yep- I'm one of those folks who is helping AD by doing exon skipping research at the University of Oxford or is Oxford University (who knows, since they sure don't!).
Currently as extra help I'm running the London Marathon on 25-Apr-2010 and trying raise £1000. If you care to help me reach my goal it will be appreciated!
I'm sure I'll write more soon...
Exon skipping is a gene therapy method that takes advantage of a naturally occurring phenomenon in genetics.
A "simplified" explanation can be found here: http://is.gd/7lILa
But to really put it simply, the type of work I'm doing is to skip part of the Dystrophin gene to make it work again. Consider it a molecular plaster/band-aid. Not a cure, but hopefully a big help.
Simple. I'm in the London Marathon already without needing to fund-raise for a chairty to run it.
That's right, I have no requirement to do it. But I believe in this organization enough to try and raise money for them.
If what Action Duchenne is trying to accomplish didn't convince you to give, I hope that bit of info does.
