Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Little Miss Sunshine, Three Colours Trilogy, anything by Woody Allen, Juno.
Jarvis Cocker and Pulp, Stone Roses, Oasis, Kate Nash, Lily Allen, Snow Patrol, Velvet Underground, Chet Baker and Charlie Parker, I like some classical (but not my own piano playing which is awful!).
Drinking coffe in the Tate Modern, playing on the beach with the kids, camping (but not in the rain), cooking (badly) for friends, going on holiday.
I'm Janet, mother of Saul (9), Emilia (6) and Davy-Ray (3) and partner of Nick. We live in East London which we love. Saul was diagnosed with Duchenne when he was 3 months old due to a freak blood test. Although this was, and is, completely devastating news, we are convinced that progress can be made to change the lives of all people living with Duchenne. In 2001, we were told to 'go home and enjoy Saul' because there was no hope for him. Thankfully, due largely to the work of Action Duchenne, the Duchenne Community has at last leapt into the twenty first century and changed its expectations and demands. We now know there is plenty of hope out there, just not enough funding into research and often pitiful services to monitor and care for those living with Duchenne.
I have worked as a teacher in secondary schools both as a head of department and more lately as a specialist dyslexia teacher, for the past 12 years, and currently am project manager for Action Duchenne's Include Duchenne Project Manager.
Difficult as the diagnosis is, many parents say that one of the hardest things to cope with is their children's learning and behaviour issues. Those living with Duchenne are at higher risk of ADHD, ASD , speech and language problems and dyslexia. Not all children with Duchenne have these problems, and most have specific rather than general learning difficulties. The Include Duchenne Project aims to give children with Duchenne the opportunity to learn necessary literacy skills so that they can be included in mainstream school and learn effectively alongside their peers. All children on the project get a full learning assessment by a qualified specialist dyslexia teacher. After this they follow the Decipha Programme which is a 39 week online literacy intervention programme based on the theme of Time Agents.
I will be running the Adidas 5k on September 7th 2009 to raise money for Action Duchenne.
