The wonder of life is how it eludes any form of control, it does as it does. The line between life and death seems to be very fluid and most of the time you are left quite surprised how much the body can take without losing the fight. Living with DMD, these realisations seem a lot more power. Moreover, sometimes I feel it is miracle anybody can survive at all with such damage to the dystrophin gene, as it is so essential for effective muscle function.

I continue to recall that fateful morning in 2008 when my lung ruptured and against all odds, I came back to this world. My life balanced on the head of pin, fighting against the pull of gravity akin to a fledgling bird spreading its wings for the first time. Like birds, it seems so impossible that I didn’t just plummet out of the sky, with only feathers between the air and the ground. Was it some kind of divine decision or a cosmic twist of fate?

For me it has to be more tangible than a higher power, though by all means not necessarily excluding a higher power; we all have different spiritual connections. I believe that there is a great power inside all of us, like a golden fortress riding on a tsunami of burning flame, pure as light and stronger than all human determination. It is our supernature, the ultimate decider of what we can endure and how long the flame will burn. Beyond our control, it is the spirit, the animus of the subconscious; we cannot behold it, it beholds us and lets us fly as birds do.
