Hi, My name is Alan. I am 30 years old and live in Livingston, Scotland.
I am married to Sharon (SharonS) and we have two children, Benjamin (3) and Phoebe (1).
Our Son Ben was born 8th August 2005... It was without doubt, THE happiest day of my life.
All I have ever wanted was a little boy... In many ways I still consider myself to be one... I have never really grown up and I never want to!
His smile is the most amazing thing that I have ever seen, and a day never goes past without realising how wonderful it was to be Ben's Dad.
Our Daughter Phoebe was born in January 2008 and our family was complete... things quite simply couldn't get any better...
...but on 6th March 2008 my heart was shattered...and it can never be repaired.
The weeks and months that followed Ben's diagnosis were the darkest days of my life. I never want to experience anything like it again.
Sharon and I cried uncontrollably, day and night, feeling (and being) physically sick…
We were grieving for our Son… all of this whilst he played happily in front of us.
It was over a month before I felt like I could return to work. Even then it was unbearable… people were tiptoeing around me, walking on eggshells.
I try my best, but I will never be the man I was before... I feel broken...
But life goes on. Every day brings new challenges, and new delights.
Ben's development in terms of his communication has come on leaps and bounds over the last year. Primarily due to the most fantastic care and assistance that he receives at nursery (within a special needs school). His little face lights up every time that we communicate verbally... It's a joy to see.
