Who Am I?

My name is Angela Stringer and I am the DMD Registry Curator and joined Action Duchenne in October 2007. Previously, I've worked in Public Relations and Computing and immediately prior to Action Duchenne spent 6 years as a school administrator and Clerk to School Governors.

Trevor and I have 2 children, Jonathan and Amy who are both currently at university. Jonathan was diagnosed with Duchenne when he was 3. His claim to fame (apart from his picture adorning various AD literature)is that he also featured in the Channel 5’s Extraordinary People programme about his friend Stuart when they were at college together.

As a family and like many of you, we have been through so much following Jonathan’s diagnosis. Back then we thought of all the things he would never be able to do – it was difficult getting past those dark thoughts, the early years were very hard. But now he’s reached his 20s we look back and see how much he has achieved. Primary school was not the best - Jon was considered to be none too bright! But then we changed schools and with it the method of teaching and understanding and it all improved. So by the time the GCSEs came along he was able to sit the exams and get really good grades. This enabled him to go to Treloars College in Hampshire to study for A levels. Treloars is a residential college and I can remember feeling I was a terrible parent leaving him with strangers on that first day. Those strangers have now become his friends and Treloars gave him the self-confidence to be able to go out and about and socialise (pub, music festivals etc) - it was the best thing we ever did for him. That reminds me, the Reading Festival 2009, he’d made all the arrangements, got the tickets, the carers, the hotel rooms (in style!) and I asked him how he was going to get there, he just grinned at me and so I took a day off work to drive him there and then collect him on the Monday – Bank Holiday Monday! Who in their right mind does the M25 on Holiday Monday!

Amy is a photography student and she volunteered to help Jon with the Action Duchenne 'Life thru a Lens' photographic project.

As a family we always attend the London Lobby - it's a serious day, but lots of fun too. Join us!
