ADDIDAS 5K RUN FOR ACTION DUCHENNE

I am running 5k for Action Duchenne

PLEASE sponsor me as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a devastating disease. It is a cause that is very close to my heart, as my brother suffers from the disease and those of you who I know well will know what a difficult start to the year he had!!

What is Duchenne?
Duchenne is a severe Muscle Wasting Disease for which there is no cure. The condition is usually
diagnosed in early childhood and affects mainly boys with rare instances in girls developing the
disease. Many young boys are in wheelchairs by the age of 10 and by their teenage years most young.
people are fully paralyzed. Young people living with Duchenne will face a short life expectancy and
often die in their late teens early 20’s. On average two boys a week are born with the disease and two
young people will die from Duchenne. We don’t want to lose another generation of young people to
this terrible disease, and we want to end the devastation that families face knowing that their son’s
muscles will waste away and he is likely to die as a young adult.
What hope for the future?
For the first time the dream of a treatment for Duchenne is a realistic possibility. New genetic
research is under way in the UK to find ways of replacing or fixing the faulty dystrophin gene. But
progress is still hampered by the lack of funding needed to take this research forward to a body wide
treatment for young people with this devastating disease.
