Can anyone help me with this!
Logan was given night splints in April 09 and so far our success with these has been poor. One of the main problems is that he is very hot and can sleep with shorts/tshirt throughout winter and no blankets (he is probably the only child at school still wearing shorts). Therefore he refuses to wear any type of sock/bandage/tights underneath his night splints. His physio has said he must not wear them with the bare plastic against his skin (and also by doing this the metal rivits inside have started to rust and left some marks on him too). We did have a referral to Newcastle and were advised that they should be lined and less moulded. However, in Scotland they don't seem to agree with this. Therefore we are left feeling that everyone is defending the best way to make these and that the most important thing has been lost sight of - what is best for Logan. As I have said to them - it could be the best product in the world, but if he is not wearing them it will do him absolutely no good! I'm just so frustrated and feel like I am getting nowhere. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi, have his splints lined our sons physio arranged for Joshs' to have chamois leather inside that wat he does not have to wear socks!! I don't know why they wont in Scotland? ... go for lining and Newcastle everytime!!

Thanks Paul - Logan has an appointment at Orthotics in Dec, so I think I'm going to send my hubby to see if he can get anywhere. I have asked for them to be lined, but they think that the sweat will make the chamois leather harden and be uncomfortable. However, I think it is better than what we have now which is bare plastic!! My husband phoned Newcastle to see if we could just go down again and get them to make them, but they were not too keen to do this (would rather give our team the specifications). It is interesting to hear that you say that Josh doesn't have to wear socks as that is what I thought, but our team told me he would still have to wear socks even if he had the lining. Watch this space as to our success at the next appointment - I have also emailled the Orthpaedic surgeon for Logan's care to see if he can help find a solution.
Thanks Donna
Hi,
Josh has been wearing splints for over 9 years and lined for many of those! we have never seen them harden [ although regular washing is a must otherwise a bit smelly] he still does at sixteen 24 hrs a day, if anything they soften and require re-lining as they can sometimes rip .. he has worn them in Florida in 100 degrees and yes sweated like the rest of us! don't drill holes in the splints to allow air in as then they then act like suction pads and stick..
Paul
Thanks again. It's so good to hear feedback from someone else who knows, rather than just taken what they say as true. There is another mum at our school whose daughter has md, and she has the same splints as Logan. Therefore if we all have the same in our area, then we don't know that there is something else that might be more suitable. At the moment Logan's splints do have holes in them, so this is good info for us if they agree to lining them, not to have the holes. Thanks again Donna
Robbie has been wearing his splits for the past year, made from soft plastic, soft foam lining in side, his orthotics/physio dept let him pick a design pattern ,trucks, new pair have teddies on, Robbie just loves teddies. also Robbie only wears his every second night at the moment,or try left leg one night than right leg second night this is how I got Robbie to wear his, same age as Logan. will up load a photo if you wish, BABS South Lanarkshire.
Hi Babs
Sorry - just noticed your message. Got Logan's lined with chamois leather and he is doing much better. Like Robbie he is wearing only one a night at the moment. But at least he is now wearing them. Thanks for your comments Donna
