
Community Accessibility and Support
Our Community Accessibility and Support stream will run on Friday 14th November. It’s designed to equip and empower you with the tools and knowledge to navigate daily life with Duchenne by learning from lived experience.
Role of steroids in DMD and navigating the challenges
Dr Sithara Ramdas, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist and Rebecca Moore, Paediatric Neuromuscular Family Care Advisor, will give an overview of steroids followed by how to support a child who is questioning steroids, and how to involve them in decisions.
Independent living and education
Emma Simmonds and Maria Sherwood from Treloar School and College will explore what independent living and education means for young people living with Duchenne. This discussion will cover practical steps towards independence, participants will offer valuable insights into balancing independence with the right support. This session will provide a safe and encouraging space to exhcnage ideas and discover new possibilities for building fulfilling and self-directed lives.
Peer Led: Accessibility: Travel (powerchairs, public transport, and private vehicle support)
We’ll be joined by Benjamin James, Cath McNichol and Tom Kelly joining us for this peer-led session focuses on the realities of travel and accessibiity for people living with Duchenne. Participants will share personal experiences of navigating modes of transport and travel. Through an open discussion, peers will highlight the common challenges, creative solutions and practical tips for greater independence and confidence when travelling. This session will offer an opportunity to exchange knowledge, learn from real life stories and build a sense of community around making travel more accessible and achievable.
Peer-led :Sharing experiences of the transition to adulthood
This peer-led session will create a supportive space for individuals to share their lived experiences of transitioning into adulthood. Together, participants will explore the challenges and opportunities that come with transition. Guided by peers who have navigated similar journeys, the session aims to foster open conversation, mutual support and exchange of practical strategies. Attendees will gain insights from real-life stories, build connections with others on the same journey and leave feeling empowered.
