Fundraising total announced for GP’s epic 362 mile run

January 20, 2022 by Lynnette

This week, Duchenne family and long-standing Action Duchenne supporters, the O’Doherty’s of Derry, Ireland announced they have raised an incredible total of £21,650 following Dr Gavin McAteer’s Mizen to Malin Head challenge in September 2021.

An inspiring team

The epic journey of 362 gruelling miles saw Dr Gavin running over 40 miles each day, accompanied by his steadfast support team Ronan and Paddy. The trio’s story is a powerful example of how working as a team can truly overcome the most difficult times. In the video below, Dr Gavin explains about how his team-mates inspired him to keep going on day 3 of 6, when he felt he could continue no longer.

Excerpts from the interview with Deborah, Niall, Paddy, Gavin and Kevin following the Mizen to Malin challenge, September 2021

A big thank you

Dr Gavin received a hero’s welcome at the top of a rocky outcrop on Malin Head, and celebrated the culmination of months of preparation with scores of supporters, including Duchenne family Deborah, Kevin and Niall and Action Duchenne’s Florence and Sam.

As a direct result of your generosity, more children, young people and adults living with Duchenne will be reached by our research, education and support programmes. Deborah’s words in the video; ‘I am a Fundraiser for Action Duchenne and have been since Niall was diagnosed 14 years ago; I will continue to fundraise for Duchenne muscular dystrophy for the rest of my life’, deeply inspire me to grasp the power we have and use it to create change.

Florence Boulton, National Director, Action Duchenne

The exceptional total raised during the course of the event is testament to the hard work, dedication and effort that the O’Doherty family, Dr Gavin and his team and family have showed over the weeks and months, thank you.
