I was introduced to Action Duchenne by the Muscle Team in Newcastle shortly after Oliver’s diagnosis in 2017. In those early, overwhelming days, their support meant everything. Members of the Support Team would call just to let me talk, vent, cry — whatever I needed. They were simply there, and that’s why I choose to support them every chance I get.
Oliver’s dad took on our first two fundraising challenges: an abseil down the ArcelorMittal Orbit and a shark dive. I managed to avoid both — thankfully, I was pregnant with Oliver’s little brother at the time.
Since then, I’ve thrown myself into the challenges too, completing multiple Gelt Gladiators (our local Tough Mudder–style race) and a gruelling 21‑mile walk along Hadrian’s Wall. What keeps me going through every tough moment is the thought of Oliver being proud of me and knowing that the money raised helps him and other boys like him.
Fundraising has become a true family effort. My sister has taken on the shark dive and two Gelt Gladiators, my partner completed a 30‑day push‑up challenge last year, and my Granny is forever collecting donations at her social gatherings. It’s always a team effort in our family.
I have so much admiration for everyone at Action Duchenne. They do incredible work for families like mine, and I genuinely believe that with the dedication of the Duchenne community that the next generation of Duchenne boys will have a different future — it’s what drives me to keep fundraising.
