Adapting to Change

Adapting to Change

This stream will run on Saturday 15th November and is designed to equip you with tool, resources and information to thrive in an ever-changing environment.

Housing Adaptations: Where to begin?

This session will focus on experts sharing practical tips, real experiences and housing adaptation resources to guide and support families. We are excited to be Jessica Glendennan, MDUK’s Information, Advocacy And Helpline Officer, Neil Sheppard from the Shepherd Group Ltd and Senior Occupational Therapist Danielle Furlong who will share their vast expertise.

Supporting healthy relationships

This session is about communication. How to navigate conversations and understand each other better. This will also help in other relationships, as you will understand more why people react the way they do and how you can respond accordingly, to help reduce misunderstandings and arguments. Darren Liquorish, counsellor and Duchenne dad, counsellor Amy Bambury and Mark Aston who facilitates our group counselling programmes, are all from The Tree of Life Counselling Centre and will share their insights and answer your questions.

Role of OTs in DMD in UK and Ireland

This session introduces how occupational therapists support children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and their families. It will highlight the OT’s role in promoting independence, assessing daily function, recommending equipment and housing adaptations, supporting self-management, and planning for future needs within a multidisciplinary team approach. Parents will gain an overview of where to begin when considering adaptations and how OTs can guide them through each stage of their child’s journey with Neuromuscular Occupational Therapist Denise Wooding and Senior Occupational Therapist Danielle Furlong.
