North Eastern lad releases debut single

13 May 2020 by Lynnette

We are excited to share with you the debut single from the super talented, Newcastle lad Alex James.

Being in a wheelchair performing is pretty awesome because it looks so different to what people are used to.

Alex James

Influenced by indie rock bands such as Foo fighters, Royal Blood and Sam Fender, ‘Direction’ blends Alex James’ rock voice and positive attitude with a catchy sing-a-long vibe to become an instant favourite.

Introduction to Alex James

“I am Alex James Kennedy, a 23 year old living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I have just recently (released my) debut single ‘Direction’ under the name Alex James, which is a powerful indie rock song all about heading in a better more positive ‘Direction’ in life.

I wish to make a statement to the world that someone with Duchenne can achieve such a thing, with a music industry which is full of ableism, I wish to change that and be the first wheelchair user frontman of a rock and roll band and inspire others in the process. “

Look out for more from Alex James over the forthcoming weeks as he will be vlogging for us.

Talented rock indie style

‘Direction’ was written about conquering life’s difficulties. Diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at the age of four, Alex James has long questioned which direction his life was headed, but his undoubted talent and self-belief prove an inspiring combination. Through his work Alex James aims to continue the long rock tradition of challenging pre-conceptions through live performance.

The card you are dealt in life shouldn’t mean that you can’t be a part of the music industry. There just aren’t enough wheelchair artists wanting to perform.

About the band

This newly emerging band in the North East music scene, has an accumulation of raw, rock and roll sounds, with influence from popular artists, such as Oasis, the Stone Roses, Royal Blood, Foo Fighters, Sam Fender, The Beatles and many more.

Frontman and guitarist ‘Alex James’ Kennedy formed this band in 2019, as part of his Masters in Music degree at Newcastle University.

Turning Challenges into Change – Our Story with Action Duchenne

I was introduced to Action Duchenne by the Muscle Team in Newcastle shortly after Oliver’s diagnosis in 2017. In those early, overwhelming days, their support meant everything. Members of the Support Team would call just to let me talk, vent, cry — whatever I needed. They were simply there, and that’s why I choose to support them every …

Louise’s London Marathon Story

Louise’s London Marathon Story Written by Louise Ruddick “My relationship with Action Duchenne came about very spontaneously at the beginning of January this year. My brother, George, was diagnosed with Duchenne back in 1992, just before his third birthday. He was obviously too young to be aware however the impact that it had on our …
