Turning Point Online Sessions
Moving from primary to secondary education can be really difficult for young people living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Many start to see their mobility decline and they find they are using their wheelchair more, or losing the ability to walk altogether. As they experience these physical changes, we know many have feelings of anger, frustration, anxiety and low self esteem. Many struggle with isolation and their emotional mental health and well being suffers.
Over the last few months we have been collecting your views on what challenges your child faces and how we could improve the support available to them and their families. We’ve used this feedback to develop a series of 12 online sessions designed to begin to tackle some of the issues you’ve reported. These sessions will be a mixture of social opportunities to meet others living with Duchenne as well as expert speakers on a variety of topics. From the success of our Yes I Can transition programme for 14-25 year olds, we know that meeting others in a similar situation has a positive impact and our online sessions enable young people to make connections, feel understood and develop crucial support networks.
There are TWO brilliant opportunities to join us in January:
On Tuesday 16th January at 6pm, we will be joined by MindJam. MindJam provide emotional and SEN support for young people through gaming, game design and digital skills. They also ran workshops at our very popular Hang Out during the 2023 International Conference and I know many of our young people really enjoyed getting involved.
On Tuesday 23rd January at 6pm, we are really excited that Treloar School and College for disabled children and young people will be running a Turning Point session focusing on the EHCP process. Don’t miss this perfect opportunity to get your questions answered by the experts!
