For families living with Duchenne, adapting our homes to ensure that they are suitable our children and young people is a huge and often overlooked issue. Housing adaptions present enormous logistical and financial stress for families already dealing with the complications of Duchenne. Many of the families in our community and in the wider disability community rely on the funding provided by the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to help them provide adequate adaptations for their children.
We were disappointed to learn that last week’s Budget Statement and Spending Review did not mention the future level of capital funding for the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), which plays such a critical role in helping people to adapt their home. This fund has been specifically highlighted in previous budgets and we hope that the additional funds allocated in the November 2020 Budget Statement will enable the DFG provision to be maintained from 2022-3 onwards.
If you and your family have worries or concerns about your housing or experiences with the DFG that you’d like to share, please get in touch with us and we will do our best to point you in the right direction for support.
