In June, the outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May announced a series of measures aimed at securing higher accessibility standards for new housing and greater workplace support for disabled people.
A consultation will also be launched on compulsory higher accessibility standards for new housing and modifications to the workplace. New planning guidelines for councils on housing for disabled people have already been issued. The Prime Minister referenced breaking down barriers faced by disabled people in employment, housing and elsewhere.
We all have a crucial role – businesses, government and civil society – in working together to ensure that disabled people get the support they need, and go as far as their talents can take them.

At Action Duchenne, we are working for a world where lives are no longer limited by Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These announcements are long overdue with more of our young people living with Duchenne looking to enter the workplace. Although the new housing requirements will benefit new build homes only, this will not help the many families needing to adapt their existing accommodation. We will continue to work with our families and other disability rights organisations to highlight and improve housing, employment and welfare reform.
