We are proud to share the news that Kiran Rowntree, from Sheffield, has received a rare award from the Chief Scout, Bear Grylls. Here is the moment the 13 year old, who has been commended for his courage, determination and dedication to scouting received the ‘Cornwall Scout Award’ this week.
Kiran’s proud parents, Penny and Kevin have been long-standing supporters and Members of Action Duchenne since Kiran was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2011.
Speaking about the award and scouting, Kiran said, “I’m very happy and proud that I’ve got this. I love the camps and the badges you can get, it’s really fun.”
Mum, Penny said, “We’re incredibly proud. Having Duchenne means that, for Kiran, his mobility is affected and he can’t always do everything that he wants to, but he doesn’t let it stop him. He’s in a lot of pain every day, but he doesn’t let that stop him either. So this award means a great deal. “
Kevin, Kiran’s Dad said; “Both boys have loved Scouts since day 1. Every week there are a variety of amazing activities and the Scout team does everything they can to make those activities inclusive. This enables Kiran to get involved in every aspect, whether it’s camping for a week, or going on an expedition. His world has become that much larger as a result of being involved with the scouts and he absolutely loves every minute of it.”
The rare ‘Cornwall Scout Award’ is named after a scout who was killed while serving in the navy during the first world war. Over the past 10 years, the prestigious award has only been awarded 5 times.
The message Kiran and his family are sharing is clear, that courage, determination and dedication can open doors and opens up the world, despite Duchenne. On behalf of the entire Duchenne community, we would like to congratulate Kiran on his significant achievement.
